Chronic Disease Prevention

Chronic Disease Prevention

In 1999 sprouted the institute of chronic diseases when CSF was an organization in the making. The institute’s first phase focused on diabetes due to the scarce attention and information that our agricultural communities obtained from existing health institutions.

Today we serve a myriad of ailments with the same spirit we did at the time of its inception, in where we offer comprehensive support to the residents of Yuma, Somerton and the border city of San Luis.

To strengthen the various activities implemented Campesinos would find support, just like today, in its group of promoters whose mission is to identify those who suffered from diabetes and involve them in support groups.

With great effort Campesinos achieved to attract the attention of hundreds of patients and their families, in where new needs such as low self-esteem and depression were identified.

Today all our affiliates receive advice for the management of depression and stress. Patient success stories have piled up after almost a decade of steady work.

More than 600 people have been dealt with at the Institute of chronic disease. The institute’s first phase concluded in 2003 at the end of a subsidy that was shared with a local health clinic.

After seeking and obtaining monetary assistance from the firm Johnson and Johnson and along with the collaboration of the University of Arizona Campesinos was allowed to access data on the progress of the sick.

Now, after ten years our cases include depression, cholesterol, high pressure, self-esteem, cancer and even learning problems in children.

El Reto

Obesity has become one of the most pressing health problems of our century. Campesinos Sin Fronteras developed  “El Reto,” Spanish for “The Challenge.” This is one of our programs that aims to bring awareness to the issue of obesity. This challenge provides the opportunity for the community to learn about the problems that arise from obesity and gives them a chance to work towards a healthier lifestyle.

More than just a physical transformation, CSF looks to provide a social and emotional transformation for those who participate in the challenge.  These participants are subjected to a diet and supervised fitness regiment for two months in attempts of making a greater impact in their lives.

At the same time, a group of promoters work with the challenge participants on issues such as self-esteem, domestic violence, preparation of healthy food, among other things to help them to make their change solid and permanent.

The activity is based on the integration of two teams affected by overweight women, usually residents of two neighboring cities, which for about 60 days compete to win the challenge.

Aware of the great acceptance and success of the challenge, Campesinos Sin Fronteras, shared their experience with the Secretariat of foreign relations of Mexico, country whose population is number one in obesity.

We believe that the mental and physical transformation of the participants goes beyond the individual person because it heavily impacts their families by changing them as well. It changes their habits of health and how they perceive obesity and learn alternative methods and strategies to overcome this ever-growing epidemic.
