Mi Familia Si Cuenta

Mi Familia Si Cuenta/My Family Does Matter

My Family Does Matter for Parents is a series of parent workshops that provides an opportunity for families to address the prevention of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases in a healthy, proactive and constructive manner even before children become sexually active. Provides opportunity to create a vehicle for parents to talk about sex, self-esteem, and peer pressure by developing wide-ranging family and school partnerships.

My Family Does Matter for Youth is based on the principles of youth development, an approach that provides teens with the necessary support and opportunities to prepare for successful adulthood and avoid problematic behavior. It also consists of a series of workshops that address prevention of teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and also gives teens an opportunity to talk about peer pressure and self-esteem. This youth program also produces an abstinence-themed play, "Haz la Diferencia" (Make a Difference), with community teens serving as the cast.

During the last three months we have had the participation of around 50 parents with 42 of them successfully completing all sessions of the program.  Our youth program has had similar success with 65 participants, and 53 of them completing the entire program.  One of the leading factors for this success has definitely been the drama project, which is under the complete direction of youth participants.  We’ve held performances in community center, schools, and churches, with attendance averaging around 100 people.
